The O’s opened their season with the regular season opener against their close friends Ilford Catholic.
Skipper Riches won the toss and had no hesitation on batting first on a much improved looking wicket.
His decision looked spot on as Minkey and Tooth batted with very little trouble putting on 96 for the
first wicket, Minkey departing for an interesting 39, the innings full of block, block, block, then a searing
drive to the boundary. Tooth opened his season in fine style holding the innings together and looking the class
act that he is. Good support from Zaman 29 pushed the O’s to a competitive 197-6, Tooth run out on the last ball
of the innings after Riches fresh from his 17th knee operation thought Tooth could take on the arm of Morgan,
alas not this time. A good score but ICCC were quietly confident of chasing the total down. In reply ICCC somehow
made it to 32 before the fall of the first wicket as Morgan played & missed or got shooting edges & somehow
survived as his beloved Arsenal were getting mullered by Spurs. The return of Hillier was as usual very interesting
after putting his back out whist warming up to bowl he produced his full repertoire of deliveries, double bouncer,
triple bouncer, beamer, the delivery that goes straight to gulley, the friendly full toss, half tracker, the
frisbee delivery, all on show today. Hillier picked up 3-48 which proved to be the best of the bunch. At 106-6
the game looked in the bag but Mulholland Captain for the day for ICCC rolled back the years and timed the run
chase to perfection hitting the winning runs in the penultimate over scoring a well-crafted 69, getting good
support from Singh 37 on route to victory. Opening day defeat but nice visit to Woodham Mortimer to look
forward to next week.
