Match Report Date 28/08/11 Oppo – Walthamstow (H) Type – Time Report by Simon Heed Following the heavy rain the two skippers took the canoe out to the middle, and after netting a couple of Sea Bass on the way, Woodford Green skipper Trim opted to bat first. This was much to the relief of O’s skipper Heed, knowing the batting tail started……….well, with the condition Liam was in following his somewhat late night ……….with the openers. Ollie Graham and Richard Eaton opened the bowling, with Graham having to come off with a sore back after just three overs. With Eaton bowling more tightly than the hush and security over Mulhollands recent application to receive his personal telegram from the Queen, and Revell bowling unplayable deliveries, Woodford Green found runs hard to get, and Revell picked up two quick wickets to reduce the home side to 59-3 from 25 overs, with the third wicket a smart run out from Richard Eaton’s exocet missile launching left arm. The victim being R.Smith, who had come out with full body armour, reminiscent of King Arthur, with the weight holding him back from getting back in the crease. Rumour has it that Smith was aware that the replacement bowler was going to be Steve Hillier, and didn’t fancy wearing some of the bouncers and lifters that were to come. With Eaton and Revell running out of steam and Hillier completing a very tidy seven overs of bowling, skipper Heed turned to Runeckles to produce his Potteresque style of magic, witchcraft and wizadry at one end, with Ian ‘out of retirement to get my 100th wicket and I bought new boots to help me’ Wicks. In his first over, with twin brother Alan looking on from the sidelines with the rest of the East End gang for company, and keeping the mixer turning, Ian took his 100th wicket, Madhavan getting the stumping with his pad, gloves, sleeves and possibly the ball too. Another Wicks joins the 100 club. Runeckles then performed his tricks, spinning the ball both ways, Khushi bowled leaving one a yard outside off stump which turned back up the hill to take middle stump. Woodford Green pushed the score as best they could and finished on 162-9 from 47 overs. LOSCC found the opening bowlers hard to get away on the damp surface, with James bowled for a duck to a surprise full toss from Singh. Shortly after this the rains came down, forty minutes or so were lost. Both skippers again boarded the canoe to assess the pitch, this time catching a handful of Mackeral on the way back. Play would resume with the O’s getting 30 overs to chase down the remaining 147 runs. Hiscock joined Mulholland to push the score to 39 before Mulholland (25) was caught deep on the square leg boundary. The diminuitive figure of Patel putting his hands high above his head and the ball stuck. Hiscock (21) and Madhavan (24) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures, Heed and Wicks both trying to push the score along, but with wickets falling and the only possibility was for the O’s to save the game, Eaton dug deep to remain not out, supported at the other end by Revell. The O’s ended on 111-8, with Kushi the pick of the WG bowlers with figures of 3-11.
