Match Report
Date 28/06/15
Oppo South Loughton (h)
Type 40 Overs
Report by Simon Heed

Once again the O’s turned out a much changed team for the visit of South Loughton.
Having already played the oppo a few weeks earlier, the O’s were looking to repeat
the result and skipper Heed duly won the toss and elected to bat.
Heed strolled into the dressing room to look around at all the eager players and to
see who was the most excited to put their hands up to open the batting on a lovely
summer day. As the yawns started and others lit up a fag instead, Al Wicks looked
up at the skipper with the famous smile, so Wicks and Heed took to the crease. For
a few overs, facing some decent bowling, the opening pair started to build a partnership
until Al Wicks was caught going for the big reverse slog sweep. Mo Zaman came in at three,
and slowly and steadily took the bowling apart, and once Heed had gone for 27, Mulholland
came in and with Mo took the score near to 200. Mo was out on the penultimate over for 97,
once again falling shy of a jug. This was becoming a feature of his batting for the season.
Mulholland once again hitting a half century, and a little cameo from Salman Rana, 14 not
out meant the O’s reached a very good 219-4.
The legendary ‘Beryl’ teas were as magnificent as ever, and confident that 219 runs was
enough to win the game, everyone filled their boots. Al Wicks had an overfill, and decided
that for the day he would just be a batter.
After tea, with Al Wicks rested at slip with a few sandwiches and cakes for company, Sal
Rana and Jack Backer-Merry opened the bowling. Once Jack had ripped through the opening
three batters, it was obvious the win would come. Good bowling from Oliver Marsh and Louis
Morgan plus the ever reliable and economical Richardson meant the scoring was kept in check.
With four overs left and a ton of runs still needed, Heed threw the ball to Ian Morgan for
his bowling debut, and after his first over went to all corners of the ground, and one ball
ending up in the Tesco car park, the long standing bowling record of Mike Randall could be
broken. 35 runs in two opening overs, could it be broken. Too right it would. Needing 39 off
the last over, Heed took a massive risk and let Morgan bowl his second over. Mulholland was
in despair at the thought of a few no balls and wides and the possibility the skipper could
be making a massive blunder, but the faith in Morgan paid off handsomely. South Loughton only
managed 23 off the over, but they were happy to have run the game close, the O’s were happy
with the win, Morgan cemented his place in the record books, one that will NEVER be beaten,
and Al Wicks finished off the rest of the teas, and the drink, and cakes, and crisps………………………..!
