Barkingside Rec was packed to the rafters on a chilly Sunday afternoon to watch the O's commence what
some pundits are suggesting could be their most successful campaign yet!
With Ilford Catholics indicating 48 hours earlier they had a possible 23 players competing for places,
only 9 made it through the rigorous selection committee, resulting in O's skipper Heed very sportingly
handing the opposition another player to make this a fair 10 a side match.
More controversy was to follow with Catholics skipper Mo Zaman winning the toss and electing to bat,
he rudely interrupted Heed who was slipping on the jock strap to ask if he could in fact have a bowl.
Heed and the O's (not at all happy at this unprofessional request) consulted Lords who said there was
no grounds for such behaviour, however a view could be taken - Heed (once again) took pity on Zaman
and gave him his way (Not what your thinking!)
The O's began the innings slowly on a typical early season wicket with Eddie and Martin slowly keeping
the score board ticking until Riches (12) was dismissed following an excellent stumping by Zaman.
Ashok was next to come in and did a great job keeping Tooth on his toes with some excellent communication
between the wickets…..Yes, No, Yes. Hang on…... Noooooooo. Ash could only add (2) before being caught of
the bowling of Arnie.
That brought Jack Rumbold to the crease who is clearly enjoying student life too much………''time in the
middle is time wasted in the bar'
A first baller for Jack meant Andy Humphreys could enjoy some time at the crease who went out with a
modest target - score more runs than league points David Moyes achieved as Manchester United manager!
 - A simple task which Humphreys made look easy as he cruised to (43) before being caught of the bowling
of Arnie (3-45) chasing a wide one.
Bob Marsh entered the crease and continued a good partnership with Tooth who was battling extremely hard,
even taking one of the lid from dangerous spinner Mukesh.
Marsh was caught for (35) runs off the bowling of Mukesh (1-14) with a couple of overs to go leaving it
to Matty (5*) and Eddie (84*) to finish the innings with O's accruing a hard to beat total of 196-5
A decent Mulholland tea gave everyone involved, a chance to warm up with a nice cuppa in the recently
re-furbished pavilion.
With the dark clouds looming, the O's took to the field and opened up with Dan and Ashok who both bowled
exceptional spells keeping the run rate low. Dan (1-14) made the break through in his third over with a
cracking delivery.
Heed then chucked the ball to young Neil Patel who gave young scorer Ollie Marsh an incredibly tough task
with the score book causing him to run out of space notching up the extras. Young Ollie was heard on the
phone to Cricinfo stating 'Yes mate honest... it was a 19 ball over''
Fortunately Neil showed courage, sticking with it & going back to basics resulting in him picking up a
couple of well deserved wickets and finishing with a respectable (2-48).
Matty (1-25) at the other end kept things tight to keep the pressure on the Catholics and was rewarded
with a wicket of following a great catch from Ashok.
The Catholics needed a miracle and Heed opted to show no mercy bringing on Humphreys (0-39) and Tooth (2-26)
to try and get through the tail. Eddie picked up a couple of wickets as the Catholics battled on but they
were never up with the rate and in the end fell 33 runs of the target (despite the O's gifting them 30 extras)
So an excellent display in difficult conditions and comprehensive win for the O's on the opening day of the
2014 season.
St Andrew's are next up for the O's who allegedly had a spy watching on from the boundary………..What lessons
will he of learned????- Simple - Don't waste time watching a load of unfit blokes playing cricket on a
freezing cold Sunday afternoon!
