O’s played their first game since the infamous Brexit vote on a mixed day of sunshine and
cloud and the odd drop of rain. With the other EU states closely watching the UK’s movements
and a few listening in to Talk Sport to hear if the O’s could bounce back after last week’s
close defeat, today’s oppo was Royal Sovereign and the colourful support that came with them,
including one who as on the special brew from when he climbed out of his bed at 7am and the
infamous Rory who toured with the O’s one year and made a fabulous 63 ball 7 and 35 balls to
get off 0. Ahh memories!
Losing the toss, the O’s were put into bat and with Superbat Dan Reese and “I’ll laugh at
everything” Mo Zaman opening the bat, confidence was high. That confidence was shot to pieces
though as Zaman was clean bowled 3rd ball of the innings. This brought Humphrey(32) to the crease,
looking a little worse for wear after his late night/early morning guided tour of London and it’s
outer borough’s via Cab, bus and train! A superb partnership of 76 between the 2 built a solid
foundation for the O’s to make a competitive total of 166-5 with Reese making a superb 84 before
being caught & bowled off the penultimate ball of the innings.
After another superb Beryl tea, the O’s came out confident of defending the total amongst the
long grass and wet outfield of QE2 park. A good opening partnership from Revell (0-9) and C Shah(1-12)
had Royal Sovereign behind the run rate from the start. First change bowlers Marsh (2-41) and K Shah(1-28)
made great indents into the Royal Sovereign innings and pushing the run rate required even higher.
Then came the change of the day, with the in form bowler of the season, Mulholland coming on and
cleaning the rest of the innings up with a superb spell of 6.1-1-11-5 and leaving the Royal Sovereign
batsmen stunned with his mixture of accuracy, bounce and sheer pace!
The other wicket was taken by Mo “The Guru” Zaman who shouted “yes thats out” before he even released
the ball from his hand and then watched as he clean bowled a bemused batsman who was seen walking off
and going straight to the changing room to pray, thinking Zaman was possessed.
Next week the O’s take on the ICCC 94 side in an earlier 1pm start.
