Match Report Date 25/07/10 Oppo – Presidents XI (h) Type – 40 Overs Report by Liam Mulholland. The O`s continued their winning run with a 3 wicket victory against the Presidents team. In the presence of our President Simon Fellman the O`s won the toss and were happy to field as they have been successful chasing down totals the last few weeks. Tight bowling by Tooth & Ramanuja restricted the visitors to 23-1 after 10 overs. Opener Meadows had a let off after Hiscock & Revell had a communication breakdown and got in each others way to put down a dolly. At 43-1 the Presidents looked set for a decent score until Oliver Graham struck with a beauty hitting top of off stump to dismiss Meadows, the Presidents much vaunted social middle order was now unveiled with the incoming Patrick Waldron after a 40 minute master class session with Vince Mulholland marched confidently to the crease, sadly from the comfort of the nets to facing a young fast bowler on the wicket trail is a different proposition, after a fiery bouncer that whistled past his ear Graham pitched one up to knock his poles over for a duck. James Parry next up and the O`s sensed another wicket but Parry survived the over. Parry surprised one and all with a stylish little innings which included a text book drive for 4 before he nicked one behind off skipper Revell. Enter Michael Larkin who after a convoluted journey to the ground that Michael Palin would have been proud to negotiate stepped forward for his first ever innings, Paddy Power offering a miserly 4/6 on a first baller, Larkin surprised the bookies by surving the over and looked more than capable. His confidence grew measureable facing the frisbie throwing Hillier smashing the dobber for a huge 4 which brought up the 1,000 boundary off Hillier this season, even Larkin with his limited knowledge of cricket could not believe players actually voted this clown as their player of the season last year. POTY had the last laugh as another friendly floater wobbled down and Larkin popped a gentle catch to psycho Riches fresh from his anger management course. 68-7 had the South Woodford bar staff quickly checking their stock as an early finish looked on the cards, The Mulholland brothers slowly rebuilt the innings nearly losing Liam Mulholland 2nd ball as Kumar tried to claim a catch after 1 bounce, 1 handed with 1 leg off the ground 1 eye closed and with 1 boot on, they put on 76 for the 8th wicket with Mulholland senior run out off the last ball of the innings by the debutant Warne who was outstanding in the field, 144-8 a good 40 short of a par score. The O`s came out swinging as Kumar and Riches peppered the boundaries with a flurry of 4`s. 65 on the board in the 13th the Presidents looked dead and buried but after Riches middled a drive to cover he was promptly giving out LBW by Hillier. The dumbfounded Riches dragged himself from the crease not a happy bunny, the Presidents now stormed back into the match with a ferocious spell from Vince Mulholland who after being smacked over his head by 1 bounce Kumar first ball quickly cleaned up the colossus from Colombo for a hard hitting 45. Mulholland took 4-21 in his spell which included a smart catch from Waldron who pouched a skier running backwards one handed. Mulholland could have had more, umpire James turning down 2 very close LBW shouts on the grounds that the ball would have gone under the stumps. 94-6 in the 25th over the O`s were not in good shape but Ramanuja continued his fine run with bat and calmly kept the scoreboard moving losing Tooth on the way at 128-7, Hiscock joined him and Ramanuja finished a run chase for the 3rd week running unbeaten on 24 the O`s victors by 3 wickets. Many thanks for all who attended the President was delighted with how the day went even though his brave troops were defeated, thanks also to Michael Redman who kindly put £20 behind the bar.
