Match Report Date 10/07/11 Oppo – Presidents XI (H) Type – 40 Overs Report by Simon Heed The sun shone down for the annual O’s v Presidents XI match, and this one proved to be a cracker, going down to the last over. O’s skipper Heed sportingly lost the toss and Presidents XI captain Liam Mulholland opted to make the O’s bat, in an effort to skittle them out quickly, knock off the runs and get in the bar before tea. Some very tidy bowling from the PXI put early pressure on the O’s with Bob James given the pointed finger of doom for LBW by none other than the President himself, Simon Fellman, showing all the skills of Dicky Bird and the flamboyance of Billy Bowden………possibly. Tooth and Marsh dug in deep to take the score to 94 before Tooth fell for 46 to become the second LBW victim. Marsh shortly followed for a very well fought 47, the O’s middle order scrambling to 149-7 after the 40 overs. Champagne moment was Alan Wicks flicking Vinnie Mulholland for six over mid-wicket. This meant more to the big lad than any of his seven wicket hauls!! Vinnie returned with figures of 4-26, but opening bowler Eaton with 1-14 from his 8 overs really kept the O’s restricted right from the start. A splendid tea served by Beryl Mulholland inspired the O’s to come out fighting, and Ollie Graham took an early first scalp bowling Maddy in the third over. Kumar and Liam Mulholland then started to take control, although some good bowling from the O’s kept them from running away with the game. At 79-1 after 18 overs and with a strong batting line up, the PXI looked well in control. Skipper Heed then turned to the ever reliable Alan Wicks to try and change the course of the game, and within a couple of overs the PXI were 90-5. Hillier took the first wicket of the mini-collapse trapping Head LBW with a well disguised quick ball. Shortly after Wicks turned on the magic with Kumar driving straight to Tooth for a very well held catch, then bowling his famous ‘in-ducker’ to Mulholland followed by a ferocious appeal, leaving the quaking umpire Maddy with no alternative but to raise the finger. There was no doubt that the ball was going to uproot middle stump, definitely no inside edge, plumb as can be. Even Hawk-Eye appealed it was so obvious. Very next ball, Wicks had Nigel Costin trapped LBW, again the frightened umpire raised his finger and then ran from the field. The two new batsmen Vinnie Mulholland and Harry Meadows used all their patience and experience to not lose another wicket, and although it was getting tight they managed to see it through to victory with a few balls remaining. Vinnie Mulholland helping himself to some generous buffet bowling from Eddie Tooth towards the end! After the match the sun continued to shine which made for a very pleasant social evening, capped by fantastic curry and rice dishes all supplied, made and served up by Arnie and his wonderful family. A really big thank you for making the day complete. LOSCC President Simon Fellman generously put a donation behind the bar which was graciously accepted by all, as he left the ground a happy man having watched an enthralling game played in great spirit, and being able to present the winning trophy to Liam Mulholland, captain of the Presidents XI.
