Match Report Date 22/08/10 Oppo – South Woodford (h) Type – 40 Overs Report by Liam Mulholland. O`s finished their Home campaign off in fine style with a stunning victory over South Woodford in a run feast of 585 total runs in the game. On winning the toss Skipper Revell was happy to field and when Tooth hit opener Imran on the shoulder in the first over with a delivery that climbed sharply it looked as if batting would prove tricky, how wrong that forecast turned out as the openers quickly got into their stride to score freely, with the score on 67-2 in the 18th over the O`s had some resemblance of control on the run rate but that was well and truly shattered on the arrival at the crease of Amad who one O`s fielder remarked `Big chap the new batter`. His first 2 deliveries from Richardson were butchered for 2 huge sixes and from that moment onwards Amad and fellow batsman Zahid peppered the boundary in a destructive partnership of 205 in 20 overs with Amad amassing 112 including 12 monster sixes and 5 fours before Tooth took a fine diving catch in the deep off Revell to dismiss him. The bowling was dispatched to all parts of the ground as the fielding became very ragged with the people`s Champion suffering badly in the carnage, forced to bowl 1 over up the hill for the first time in his career as a punishment for arriving late, he was frankly delirious by the end of the innings reeling around in the outfield gibbering away in a mixture of gujarati and urdu. Zahid finished unbeaten on 115 including 2 sixes and 19 fours. South Woodford finishing on a huge 292-3. A short break at tea as both teams attended a service on the adjacent pitch as a dour South Woodford stalwart had their ashes scattered on the pitch, a wag in the O`s bowling ranks piped up at tea that he would like his ashes scattered on a length as it was the only way he would ever hit it. On resumption that old timer L.Mulholland was bristling with belligerence as he crashed the first ball through the covers for 4, disaster struck though as before the over was out Kumar, after 5 visits to the tea table, was run out without facing by a country mile as he struggled to make his ground the fact that he had a picnic hamper strapped to his back and 18 chocolate bars shooting out his pocket as he lurched down the wicket hardly helped. Tooth joined the old boy and for the next 31 overs they displayed a master class in run chasing as Mulholland reached his 50 first blasting 11 fours in the process, Tooth soon followed as the O`s were never far behind the run rate 76 off 10, 130 off 20, 215 off 30. Mulholland going for 108 in a stand of 218, the 25th club ton for the washed up has been and his 3rd this month, so for all his critics out there read and weep people still plenty left in the tank. 71 needed off the last 8 still a tall order in the rapidly fading light but Tooth now found a willing partner in mad dog Riches who scampered furiously adding 1`s and 2`s as the O`s edged ever closer. 45 off the last 5 and Tooth moved into another gear as the next 2 overs went for 25. 20 off the last 3 became 10 off 2 and finally just 3 off the last over with fittingly Tooth nudging the winning run to finish unbeaten for a magnificent 137 and his 4th ton of the season in an unbroken stand of 71 with mad dog who finished not out on 18 a remarkable club record chase beating the 257 to defeat Ilford CC in 1999. Incredibly after the 6`s bonanza of the first innings the O`s chased down 292 with 3 balls to spare and in the process did not score a single 6. A glorious way to finish the Home season as the O`s looked forward to Woodford Green next week.
