Report vs Hign Beach

Match Report
Date 22/07/12
Oppo – High Beach (a)
Type – 40 Overs
Reporter: Immy Grayson-Inspecta

Summer arrived at last, better late than never, although after the first hour of play some of
the O’s team may have wished for a sudden downpour.

High Beach won the toss, and elected to bat. Al Wicks took an early first wicket, which brought
ringer number 1 to the crease in the face of Forresters’ Steve Ward. Ward and ringer number two,
Fowler (Lougton) took the score to 75 before Louis Morgan (the O’s ringer at 12 years of age!) had
Fowler trapped in from of the stumps for lbw. This just opened up the flood gates for ringer number
three Dassanayka (who apparently played U-19 Test cricket for Sri-Lanka, like the other half a million
who claim to), and he proceeded to smash little Louis around the ground, having survived a first ball
stumping, one of those third umpire moments which surely would have favoured the lightning quick work
of keeper Williams. He survived, and continued obliterating the O’s bowling. After a quickfire 88, he
retired to go and tell all his new team mates how he overcame the pace of Kumar, the spin of Hiscock
and the swing of Morgan. The O’s battled o, with Runeckles giving the batsmen a few problems with his
leg spin, bowling Smith with a Warne-style leg break. Steve Ward batted very well, and gave great
respect to the bowling of young Louis Morgan, as he reached a well deserved 100, at which point High
Beach declared on 266-3 after 34.2 overs. A fair declaration giving the O’s a potential 50 overs or
so to go for it.

Unfortunately the batting line up was not good on paper, and eventually not good on the field either.
High Beach bowlers were very sporting as Bob James hit full toss after full toss to the boundary, reaching
67 (60 of which were boundaries) and ably accompanied by Jay Williams who was run out for 43. With some
cameos from Kumar (22) and Hiscock (15), the O’s kept alive the slim chance of chasing down the total,
but High Beach brought on the ringers to bowl, thus securing the win. Louis Morgan being last to go with
a 75mph leg spin googly doosra chinaman, from Dessanayka. This seemed to be his stock ball, and along with
Ward reduced the O’s to 199 all out, the last six wickets falling for 11 runs.

The O’s boys stuck around keeping the bar ticking over with Steve Ward, although skipper Heed was looking
around for the celebratory jug of beer from the ‘retired’ batsmen, but had to make do with some beers from
the jubilant umpire (Liam Mulholland) who just had to stand and watch the fun all day , instead of being
‘fetch boy’ for once!!

Onwards and upwards, can the O’s get back to a win before the tour? Next game is the Presidents XI on 29th
July. Let’s hope the sun continues shining.
