Yet another classic in the history of LOSCC………
The exceptionally strong O's headed up the M11 to Hockerill with full expectation of a win was on the cards (Sulosan,
Tooth, Naylor, Ward, Mulholland all in the ranks - Lara would have struggled getting into this side!)
However the cricketing Gods had other ideas…………….Skipper Heed lost the toss and informed his boys that they would be in
the dirt and seeing as it was a timed game, there would be no limit on the pain and suffering endured in the equatorial
African heat.
Fortunately though the O's didn't get off to a bad start with young Jack Capewell (3-31) grabbing a couple of wickets
which included a smart caught and bowled. Auton at the other end continued his fine start to the season and would have
possibly picked up a wicket of his own had Mulholland done a triple forward somersault in the slips to make what was
viewed by Boycott on TMS and Auton as 'a chance put down'
Hockerill were in a bit of trouble but a superb 100 by Sanders (Sawbridgeworth 1's opening bat) smashing it to all
parts & never looking in any trouble kept the home side in with a shout of reaching a 250 target. Richardson (5-67)
and Patel (1-20) both bowled well with young Neal picking up a wicket in his first over doing his best 'Arkle'
impression in the run up to frighten the opposition batsman & Ricsy bowling an exceptional spell picking up his first
5 wickets haul for 15 years! He would have been given the ball as a memento but unfortunately the 17th ball that was
used had been smashed into Sawbridgeworth.
Hockerill were all out for 192, which was a really good effort by the O's bowling attack and meaning the O's could
enjoy tea knowing with all that batting that the win was secure :) Sulosan tucked into 12 plates of watermelon having
not been fed for 6 months since heading off to Uni and Naylor was seen munching a couple of doughnuts having declared
to his teammates, that his particular favourites are the ones with 'jammin'!
Slo-mo and Eddie opened for the O's and were expected to see the job through but horror struck early on as Slo-mo was
caught for a duck. Eddie (15) soon followed having been bowled by a lively Rayer. Matty (23) and Jack(18) put on a few
including a well run 6 before a comical run-out took place seeing Matty dismissed after Jack had a sitter dropped and
stunned that the catch was put down, Matty was frozen in the middle, before deciding he might as well run but only to
be run out. Capewell soon followed after being trapped LBW. Now was the time for the O's batsman to 'Get up..Stand up'
Unfortunately though things did not go as planned, Hovis TV Star Wardy (2) was bowled and Simon soon departed having
hit a boundary which was recorded in the book as a 3 (Scoring lessons required anyone!)
With 100 still required and Rasta Naylor & Liam Mulholland at the crease, you could not right off the O's.
Naylor 'rolled up' his sleeves, looking calm and relaxed and we can only assume he was 'in the zone' when he went out
to bat having prepared by 'having a net' with Keith Richards before going out to bat.
Naylor whistling 'No woman No Cry' as he took guard quickly decided to 'Stir it up' and got stuck into the Hockerill
attack like a 'buffalo soldier' The O's were still in it, Naylor was superb & cracked a few boundaries supported well
at the other end by Li. The run chase was getting close but unfortunately the crucial wicket of Naylor for 41 put the
odds back in favour of Hockerill. Auton joined Mulholland with his new 'boom boom bat' given to him by Uncle J but in
all honestly it was more a 'crash bang' piece of wood as Auton launched it into the garages upon his return to the
pavilion after lobbing one up and getting caught.
Neal entered the crease and added 3 more vital runs to keep the O's in it. Patel was heard between overs saying to the
shaky Mulholland 'Relax son just focus and I will get you through this' Disaster struck though as Patel was caught
which meant that left it to all-rounder Richardson to see the O's home- With 18 run required off 3 overs, Mulholland
finally buckled under the pressure…….. Rather than face 'redemption' and give strike to a batsman with 3000 runs to his
name to finish the job , Mulholland (33 Not Out) made a 'suicide call' which saw Ricsy run out by approximately 22 yards.
A disastrous defeat by the O's with Oakhill up next……….
