Type 40 Overs
Report by Squarer Andy Squarer

O’s travelled to South Loughton looking for back to back wins and skipper Heed was immediately under
the cosh when devastating traffic in the local area meant that O’s numbers were light as the clock
approached 2’o clock. Fortunately he won the toss and on a red hot day he elected to bat opening with
Zaman and Riches. The O’s got off to a slow start and it wasn’t long before Zaman was bowled giving
returning uni boy Jay Williams a chance to bat. The classy batsman soon found his way to 21 showing
that the only textbooks he’s been reading are cricket ones! He smashed some lovely drives before picking
out the wrong fielder and being caught! Heed came to the crease and when he was bowled for 7, the O’s
were looking like they were going to struggle.
Fortunately South Loughton brought on a well known face to O’s fans…..The pitch forker…..Remember him?
Yes that’s right…The lad who smashed Al Wicks for 4 denying him a chance of top wicket taker a few years
back…He regaled us all with that tale after the game stating he hadn’t actually ever scored a run before
that boundary and only joined South Loughton hoping that Al would play so he could score some more runs
this season!!!!! Bit disrespectful if you ask me!
Anyway he came on with some very scary dibbly dobbly flighters which helped the O’s get 177 for 3 albeit
a score which looked way too short. Marvel who batted for the full 40 overs ended up on 62 Not out with
Humphrey scoring 44 Not Out.
There was a notable incident as two moto cross racers decided to race across the outfield during play…It
was alleged that when challenged as to why they had done this they replied ‘’We’ve been watching that
Riches fella for an hour and he ain’t hit it off the square yet so we took our chances’’
An interesting tea which consisted of fish fingers was demolished by all involved giving the O’s some
energy to start the second innings.
Heed opted with a pace attack of Revell and Richardson who both started well and Revell in particular
was very unfortunate not to have picked up a wicket having a catch dropped and a couple of half chances
just fall short of the stretching hands.
Richardson though is an unstoppable machine now he has reached 60 and was in for another home treat after
taking two early wickets to remove the openers with some very steady bowling. From that point the O’s could
not find another breakthrough and Zaheed in particular took a liking to Karan smashing him for 31 off his 3
overs. To be fair to Karan though he wasn’t helped by his deep mid-wicket positioning. Having chased the ball
all over South Loughton for twenty minutes the un-named fielder (Humphrey) was looking tired and lost and
Karan wasted no time getting stuck into him and telling him he wasn’t square enough which was the obvious
reason all those 6’s kept happening – Andy…….Support your bowler!!!!!!
Hiscock and Marsh came on and started well before things started to unravel albeit Zaman and the O’s were
adamant that Zaheed was stumped off Matty’s bowling but the square leg umpire remained unmoved – By that
time it was too late anyway and the game was lost.
Heed decided to roll the dice one last time and threw the ball to Marvel who went for 20 (Yes twenty) off
his first over……..With the record under threat he shored things up though and Richardson finally got the
wicket of Zaheed (84) with an excellent catch from Baker-Merry as the home side got over the line with 7.3
overs to spare.
Summary - The O’s well beaten albeit Zaheed survived a couple of very strong LBW appeals early in his innings
which was probably the game changer……….
