Match Report Date 17/06/12 Oppo – Kingfisher (h) Type – 40 Overs Report by Nawan Noosdirools. The O's took part in a controversial contest this Sunday against Kingfisher cc which featured many hours of hollering, shouting, arm waving, screaming, glove throwing, accusations of deliberate misinterpretions of the rules and outrageous sledging - and that was just Martin Riches. Batting first Kingfisher started as they meant to go on i.e risking serious back and shoulder injuries trying to smash the ball into Barkingside High Street. In fairness on one or two occasions they came close and hit several sixes which is some achievement at the Barkingside Oval. Notable batting perfomances came from A Yousef, whose slight stature belied his hitting ability and scored a classy 57, and Khan who did a very reasonable impersonation of Youvraj Singh. The O's bowlers toiled throughout the 40 overs some of which was captured by a local news photographer who was rumoured to be snapping the action on the boundary. During one of Hillier's overs, the photographer, frustrated at being unable to get a decent action shot due to the lack of pace, put down his Nikon 3DX and pulled out an easel and oils to paint one of Hillier deliveries as it floated in the air - the first still life painting of a live delivery ever recorded. Matt Hiscock bowled well and kept the runs down picking up three wickets along the way however several drop catches didn't help the cause although did secure LOSCC's financial future for the next 7 years through fines. Kingfisher smashed their way to a massive 232-8, which was a tough ask at Barkingside. In reply Riches and Bob James started well however Bob pulled hamstring and had to retire. Kingfisher bowlers turned out to be pretty useful as well and the O's suddenly found themselves 40-4. The only innings worthy of mention were a solid 21 from Hiscock and a breezy 31 by Bob Marsh who found the boundary well before being caught at deep square leg. The O's batted amid a wall of noise throughout from the Kingfisher side who whooped, shrieked and howled everytime the ball hit the pads or flew past the edge with the laws of the game largely an irrelevance, much to the annoyance of Umpire Martin Riches who whooped, shrieked and howled back at them twice as loud in reply. Madhavan played some great attacking shots batting at 9 and was eventually out on the last ball of the game for 15 with the O’s 120 runs short. Kingfisher were worthy winners on the day with an excellent batting and bowling effort and so returned to the bar, walked straight past it and disappeared out the park to celebrate.
