Oppo – Eversley Park (a)
Type – 40 Overs
Report by Ian Richardson

Once upon a time there was a rather poor cricket team that couldn’t bat, bowl or field.
They would turn up each week, get turned over and then decide that ‘sport was the winner’! – the crowd were calling for
the resignation of the under fire skipper and for the return of Loz Felman and Bob Meeks!

Then last week a few signs that maybe they were not so bad started to appear in a hard fought draw against Coopersale.
That was carried over into this week when the O’s notched up their first win of the season against Eversley Park.

The skipper inserted the opposition mainly due to fact that he only had four batsman and one of them Simon Heed,
had scored about 5 runs in five innings this season.
The rotund (fat) Al Wicks unsurprisingly opted to waddle down the hill rather than up it and bowled with pace and power,
sweating profusely as cleaned out the openers and backed up by some great catching and lucky bowling from the youngsters
Rhys Martin and James Walker plus a ball from Dave Revell that went under the ground and reappeared to bowl the batman
the first six wickets had gone down with less than 100 on the board.

Eversley Park made a good recovery and it took the skipper (who was reluctant to bowl following his near record attempt
of last week) and the return of the massive Wicks to eventually bowl out the team from Basildon for 163.

Knowing they had a slight chance of actually chasing down this total seemed to galvanise the Orient boys and Mulholland
and Evans strode out to the wicket with conviction. 1 minute later Evans strode back to the pavilion out first ball –
adding this to his two drops at slip to complete a great day for the Tibster!

Out walked Heed who only agreed to play at 11 o’clock the night before due to his two torn hamstrings and broken ankle
playing up. Heed played an inning that Gordon Greenidge at his most injured and Douglas Bader would have been proud of
ending up unbeaten on 65 - Polly this is what an injured man can really do!

Together with Mulholland (85) he put on 150 for the second wicket full of stroke play, deft singles and near run outs.
Unfortunately, this meant that Headmaster James sat for 30 overs with his pads on in the pavilion boring everybody with
his war stories.

The O’s overhauled the Eversley park total with 3 overs and 8 wickets to spare and everyone agreed that real winning is
great……. sod sport being the winner!
