Match Report Date - 15/06/09 Oppo – Eversley Park (a) Type – 40 Overs Report by Liam Mulholland. On a another blazing hot Sunday afternoon, the O's squeezed home by 14 runs in a hard fought contest against Eversley Park. Fresh from another L`Oreal product launch, the returning skipper Richardson had no hesitation in batting first in these glorious conditions. Evans and L.Mulholland continued their fine run together putting on 80 for the first wicket, their 5th successive half century stand of the season to go with previous scores of 65,52,92,85. Evans first to go for a tidy 19. The O's lost their way after Mulholland was dismissed by a good one from Emmerson for yet another well crafted 50. After being declared fit to play for the club, doctor Redman was full of confidence for his first knock of the season plenty of switch hitting or doing a "Dilshan" comments sounded that this could be an interesting knock but alas it was business as usual as his poles were knocked all over the place first ball. On a low slow wicket scoring quickly was proving difficult but the introduction of Ramanuja boosted the scoring with a rapid 32 in 4 overs and this fellow calls himself a blocker. A useful 10 from Parkes which included digging out 13 consecutive yorkers helped the score along to 162-9 in the 37th over with the O's looking like they would be bowled out for the first time this season the appearance of skipper Richardson to the crease for the first time since last August and currently standing on 49 ducks for the club did not bode well but the skipper kept that 50th duck at bay for another week with a handy 9 Not Out and the O's finishing on 180-9 after 40 overs. In reply runs flowed from one end but the East London gangster Wicks, was full of fire and brimstone from the other end boosted by the appearance of his twin brother on the boundary edge, the psychotic deranged mobster from Bethnal Green rolled back the years in his opening spell of 1-8 in his 5 overs. Skipper Richardson brought himself on after picking up some hints from the World Cup 20/20 that taking the pace of the ball is the way to go, well let me tell you there is no bowler in the World Cup bowling at this punters pace, his first ball a nice slow full toss was slamed straight down the safe hands of James who calmly accepted his 4,567 career catch. The skippers slow dribblers were doing the job picking up 4-37 in his spell but the runs were still coming at a handy rate for the Park. At 69-5 in the 16th over it seemed a big win for the O's was on the cards but a fighting 5th wicket stand of 72 in 10 overs between skipper M.Bowers and J.McIver looked like the the game was going the way of the hosts, fielding started to get ragged and the skipper was starting to pull his hair out and believe me that boy has some to pull out. The skipper called golden arm Hillier into the attack and Hillier handed the umpire his American Express card as he tried to buy his way into the wickets column, straight away he drew Bowers down the pich for a nailed on stumping chance but unfortunately Cooper had not taken his brave tablets at tea standing in another postcode behing the stumps by the time he collected the ball on the 38th bounce Bowers was safely back in his crease, Hillier was not beaten should he try a bouncer, yorker, in-ducker? He thought for a nano second and went back to old faithful a juicy full toss on leg stump that Bowers smashed straight to Ramanuja who gleefully took the catch in the deep. With one end now open the return of Wicks proved crucial and after having one LBW turned down due to the ball maybe going under the stumps, he slammed another delivery into the pads of Emmerson who left the crease in double quick time before the umpire raised his finger and before Wicks could threaten the umpire with more idle threats of concrete overcoats, horse`s heads, usual gangster shite. McIver was now running out of partners and the strike and the tricky Ramanuja bowled Duffy with a classic leg break to complete a close 14 run victory for the O"s.
