Match Report Date - 13/07/08 Oppo – Epping Foresters (H) Type – 40 Overs Report by Michael Redman Who would have thought that this match was a competition between the O’s own players for the simplest dropped catch of the season? Epping Foresters batted first on an overcast afternoon and in the early overs Wilks spooned a Wicks delivery to mid wicket where Dan Riches, making his debut alongside a proud father, dropped a sitter. Fortunately for the O’s it only cost 69 runs and fortunately for Dan he escaped the wrath of Wicks. Epping Foresters made steady progress with Wilks making the most of a short leg side boundary to pummel Richardson for 4’s and 6’s. Ritzy could not see the quality in the shots, only in his own bowling. Figures of 6 -0- 47-2 bear that out. Soon it was Hillier’s turn to apply for drop of the season spilling a simple caught and bowled chance. The expletives were still hanging in the air when next ball the batsmen was caught at long off by Wicks who proceeded to do an impression of a cockroach. Others thought he was paying tribute to Tibby who was sadly missing from the game having failed a late fitness test on his back. A rush in the last 5 overs saw Epping Foresters reach 217, probably 30 runs too many. After another lovely tea LOSCC set out on their chase for victory. The schoolmaster was soon bowled for 9 which brought Liam and Eddie together, the batsmen in form. They made good progress until Liam’s dismissal which exposed a brittle middle order and the O’s fell behind the required run rate. 88 were needed in the last 10 overs but after Eddie was dismissed for a polished 76, wickets fell quickly including Coops first ball, yet another attempt at joining the Primary Club. He may have been in a rush to get back to his fag that he had just lit. In the end the O’s fell 37 runs short of Epping Foresters despite some lusty blows from Wicks. Another interesting game for the O’s and the post match recriminations were soon forgotten as we looked forward to the next game at High Beech wondering if Martin and Dan would find the ground tucked away in the middle of nowhere.
