Oppo – Eversley Park (A)
Type – 40 Overs

Rain, rain and more rain predicted. Fair play to Eversley Park for allowing the game to go ahead in appalling
conditions. The wind blowing children across the park, evidence of mud slides, and this was just the fielding.

O’s skipper Heed wanted to avoid the inevitable soaking that the fielding team would have to endure, duly won
the toss and elected to bat first. In hindsight, this was the singularly most important decision of the day,
perhaps of the season. In a game reduced to 30 overs the Eversley Park opening bowlers found a lot of extra
zip off the slippery wet surface with the new ball, making life difficult for the openers. Williams was looking
in good form, before being caught on 12 following three well struck boundaries. Mulholland was c&b for 24 by
Spicer, the pick of the EP bowlers. It was always going to be an uphill struggle for the O’s, but could this
be the day that the East End mobster twins could ‘put things right’. Ian ‘Ronnie’ Wicks had returned after serving
his five year absence to join Al ‘Reggie’ Wicks promising to ‘sort out’ the oppo. They even brought along young
Jack ‘Charlie’ Gardner to help in the racket they had planned. Reggie thrashing one into the trees, slicing a
couple without so much as a blink, Ronnie thumping a few on the way, even enjoying the odd grin when he cut one.
The boys were back, Mum would be proud. Even Charlie managed to get in on the act with a couple of little stabs.

However, back to the game. Matt Hiscock played his best innings so far, coming in at number 8 and top scoring
with a well crafted 25 not out. O’s finished on 124-6, respectable but never enough against a strong opposition.

A quick turnaround to get the game finished before the rain became heavier saw the O’s take to the field and the
rain stop completely. Result! However 87 balls later the game was over. A quickfire 50 from Bowers supported by
Lee Smith 43 was too much for ten man O’s. Reggie taking the only wicket to fall, as the remainder of the bowling
took a pummelling from some good batting on a fast improving wicket.

The O’s were put out of their misery without too much pain, apart from Ronnie pulling up at the first hurdle (hamstring)
and Reggie tried his best to emulate Tom Daly trying to reach out for a catch, missing by five yards and now being
seen as the cause of the coincidentally timed earthquake in New Zealand.

A day to forget for most, although shares in Vanish could see a sharp rise as mothers and housewives try to get
those mud stains out of the whites.
