Match Report Date 09/09/12 Oppo – Cheshunt(a) Type – 40 overs Interview with Gary Watkins Thigh Pad. LOSCC – “Gary Watkins Thigh Pad (GWTP). Thank you for agreeing to speak to us for your thoughts on last Sundays game vs Cheshunt.” GWTP – “No problem, it’s a pleasure." LOSCC – “Before we talk about the game last Sunday, can you tell us what’s it like being the biggest thigh pad in the northern hemisphere?” GWTP – “Look, I’m just a normal thigh pad, yes I am one of the largest in the world and yes I’ve been used as a raft to help rescue missions from sunk cruseliners and used as body armour in Helmand Province but essentially I’m just a very down to earth thigh pad like any other thigh pad.“ LOSCC – “Having combat experience must be tough. I guess you were pleased for a break and to be back on the cricket pitch last Sunday?” GWTP – “Getting shot at by insurgents and being under constant threat is mentally and emotionally exhausting for any thigh pad, so getting back to blighty for some R&R was a welcome relief. This Sunday Gary threw me on top of the jalopy, strapped me down and off we trundled to Cheshunt CC for a game vs the Orient Supporters.” LOSCC – “How was the game?” GWTP – “It was a good game and the O’s Supporters played very well. The O’s batted first although I missed the first part of the innings as Gary was running late but when I got to the ground I could see Orient started well but lost a couple of wickets with Matthews bowling Panoli and Thiru. Ryan Naylor and Eddie Tooth were going well with Naylor smashing the ball to all parts. They put on 160 odd I think and then Simon Heed came in for a quickfire 28. The supporters ended with 275 in the end which I thought would be a tough chase even though the wicket was a road.” LOSCC - “What was it like opening the batting and facing Steve Hiller?” GWTP – “Facing Hillier is strange. It’s like you are experiencing zero gravity with the ball just wobbling motionless in mid air. In fairness Steve bowled a very tidy spell and was hard to get away. Gary was struggling and jettisoned me and I was strapped to the umpire. I didn’t mind, I had a better view of the game! LOSCC – “We heard there were some good catches in the field?” GWTP – “The supporters were catching the ball everywhere – first up was Panoli who caught two that went into orbit then Steve Hillier took an outrageous catch diving like a salmon to dismiss A Richardson. A good 49 from M Richardson took Cheshunt up to 177 but the run rate kept creeping up and wickets were falling regularly and Cheshunt fell short in the end. Martin Runeckles (3-51) bowled an excellent spell of a batting friendly wicket All in all it was a good game and well done to the Orient Supporters who played really well.” LOSCC – “Sounds like you enjoyed it – did you have a few pints after the game?” GWTP – “I did and it was great. We joined the O’s supporters and heard some great stories. After 10 pints and 6 bags of McCoys I stumbled out of there into a 6 seater cab to get me home. What an evening! I must confess I did have a massive spew before I crawled to bed though…”
