Match Report Date 08/05/11 Oppo – Hainault & Clayhall (a) Type – Time game Report by Ed Tooth This Sunday saw the O's travel to Clayhall Park to play Hainault & Clayhall on a bright but windy afternoon. Skipper Simon Heed chose to bat first and had some new faces on the side including young Jack Baker-Merry and a new canadian character by the name of Ian Williams - possibly the most enthusiastic player the club has ever seen, and, if words were runs, would be more prolific than Sachin Tendulkar! Mulholland and Revell opened the innings and got off to a steady start before Revell lost his wicket for 4. The wickets of Mulholland and Tooth then followed however Bob Marsh entered the fray and smashed the ball to all parts for a swift 48. Skipper Simon Heed supported Marsh well and then led from the front hitting an excellent 52 not out (although there were reports of a “runs for bitter” controversy where Simon was alleged to have passed a 4 pack of John Smiths through the scorebox to fellow ex-Eton Manor colleague and scorer Les Edwards, in exchange for extra runs to reach his fifty. These reports were not confirmed although in the scorebook Harry Meadows strangely appeared to have scored -2). The O's finished up on 179-9 - which was a competitive total on a lively green wicket. Tea followed and Ian explained that he could only eat certain parts of the tea as he has a very serious nut allergy. Now LOSCC is not allergic to nuts (many have played for the club over the years) but unfortunately Ian is, and to him a selection of bar snacks would be a dangerous game of russian roulette - if a peanut passed his lips he would be on his way to A&E. In his own words the last time this happened he woke up in hospital “surrounded by white guys and I thought Oh God I’ve died and gone to the wrong place!”. Certainly no one would want this to happen as it would stop the entertaining flow of commentary – in fact the entire game was merely a sideshow to Ian who managed to speak to literally every person, playing or otherwise, cat, dog, tree and bird that entered clayhall park! Following tea Hainault came out to bat to face the boomerang bowling of Revell and the floaty filth of Steve Hillier. In fairness to Steve he bowled very econonomically and picked up an early wicket with Jack Baker-Merry taking his first catch behind the stumps. Dave Revell having several deliveries smashed back at him had to come off due to his hands falling off and Jack Rumbold took over from the top end. The supporters continued well but the H&C opener Oliver looked in good touch and took a particular liking to Ed's bowling, hitting the ball to all parts. Some catches were dropped (Bob James claiming that he should be given, and not fined, 50p for his one handed diving effort) and Ian had to leave the field due to pulling a hamstring/vocal chord. With H&C needing 50 odd off the last 10 overs the game was evenly poised but despite some excellent bowling from Meadows and 2 wickets from Mulholland, Hainault & Clayhall edged to victory in the last over to win the game.
