Match Report

Oppo – Godshill (a)
Type – 40 Overs
Report by Glenn Evans

After the heroics of Wellow & Plaitford getting a 35 over game in on a day when even the ducks were taking shelter an
overhung LOSCC team arrived at Godshill for their 2nd tour game only slightly more optomistic of a ball being bowled.
However, on a pitch that is so high above sea level, on a plateau that offers views to die for, the natural drainage
system made it possible for the game to go ahead. LOSCC opened the batting with Costin & Evans. Costin, seeing 3 balls
after the previous nights frivolities, pushed the score along quickly, but couldnt repeat his previous years efforts at
this ground (100no) and eventually played the wrong ball only to see his middle stump upended, for 15. Hampsheir + Heed
helped a struggling Evans to push the score along but both fell cheaply - 2 + 15 respectfully. Evans, back after missing
half the season with injury, was next to go with a snails pace 25 (nothing to do with the injury i hasten to add,
it was just his usual batting!) This, however, brought the 2 fast scoring, lightening speed batting maestro's to the
crease (Tooth & Mulholland for those struggling to come up with any names!). The score was pushed along steadily until
Mulholland, having a poor day by his standards, fell for only 12 but Tooth, being helped along by a fairly strong bottom
order scored a respectable 69 before eventually being caught. The O's eventually were all out for 187 with an over to spare.
The pick of the Godshill bowlers was Pietersen with the figures 6-4-9-3. After yet another legendary tea from Godshill's
infamous Doris, LOSCC took to the field. With some excellent bowling from the 2 openers, Watkins & Hillier...........
(YES, that is correct, 'Watkins', 'Hillier' and 'excellent bowling' in the same sentence - theres an oxymoron if ever
there was one!!)........Godshill were kept to low scoring until the Godshill skipper Cousins (6) edged one to slip
where Evans, finally doing something in the game, took a low catch. Evans was involved in the action again for the
second wicket, taking another good catch, this time running (i use the term loosely!) backwards at gully to send
Downer (18) back to the pavilion. Costin then got into the action behind the stumps, first stumping a wandering Beale (3)
and then catching Venn for 0. Robb and Pollard kept the O's on their toes until Tooth bowled Robb for 42.
Evans then got into the action once again, this time taking an outstretched running catch from third man to point
(although some said it was from gully, but dont believe them). This sent Pietersen trudging back to the pavilion for 0.
With Watkins taking a rare catch (no surprise, though, when you hear it was off his own bowling) the game was effectively
over. Marlow (20*) tried in vain to push the Godshill score along but eventually ran out of partners with Costin
taking a second catch behind the stumps and skipper Richardson snaring his customary rabbit of the day. Just like in
Baseball where a specialist pitcher is brought in to close out the match, the O's turned to their specialist tour bowler,
Hampshier, to finish off the game, his wicket closing the Godshill innings on 142, giving the O's their first tour win by
45 runs. A special mention to Watkins with figures of 8-1-20-3.So it was off to the Fighting Cock for one or two jugs of
ale and the usual excellent banter to finish off a successful day.
