Match Report Date 05/09/10 Oppo – Cheshunt (a) Type – 40 Overs Report by Liam Mulholland. The O`s finished the season in fine style with a thrilling 5 run victory at Cheshunt. The week has been one of total chaos after the club had the ICC anti corruption unit check out some dubious bowling spells from the O`s, the unit can`t understand how a certain bowler who shall remain nameless due to legal reasons can have deliveries registering 4,6,4,W,4,6,4,W on a regular basis why are there no dot balls only boundaries and wickets?, also in their mandate to clean up cricket they are concerned about the outcome of the POTY vote for 2009 which quite frankly so am I. On winning the toss skipper Riches had his hand forced by the absence of 2 key players in Tooth & Ramanuja so had no option to bat first. One bounce Kumar going quickly for a duck in the second over not the start they were looking for but L.Mulholland & Marsh quickly moved the score on to 66 in the 15th over before Marsh was bowled by his old team mate Watkins for 15 at the other end the old boy Mulholland looking in ominous touch. Heed then added 32 in a stand of 75 in 15 overs to rush the score along to 141-3, 68 minutes into the game our intrepid duo finally arrived via Cowdenbeath due to Tooth`s sat Rav giving instructions in Hebrew. Tooth eventually made it to the crease with the help of ropes and grappling irons at No 7 in the order and quickly added 26 with 5 fours in a stand of 47 in 6 overs before being stumped to finish the season with the remarkable stat that he has never been out bowled in a Sat or Sun fixture in 2010. At the other end that old stager Mulholland in his 400th game for the club finished unbeaten on 103 with his 4th ton in 6 matches full of trade mark cuts, pulls and drives. O`s closing their 40 overs inning on a very handy looking 220-6. Tooth quickly removed opener Bloomfield with a good delivery that ripped through his defence but the arrival of England stunned the O`s as he crashed 5 quick boundaries meanwhile Revell bowled a very steady spell of 8-3-22-1 those 18 dot balls proving very useful indeed. The people`s champion was brought into the attack and yet again his experience and control was evident as he finished an excellent 6 over spell for only 15 with the wicket of England for a classy 46. At 70-3 after 19 overs Cheshunt had plenty to do but they really pushed the O`s hard forcing the field deeper and deeper, the O`s dried up the boundaries and made the batters run 2`s and 3`s but the fielders were also made to run far more than certain players were looking for old boy Mulholland being run ragged after finding himself away from the sanctuary of slip. The two Richardson`s scampered a 57 run stand before Aidan played on to Hillier for 36. Hillier bowling by far his spell of the season when the pressure was on and as we know from past experience his bottle does go big time but not today. Skipper Matt Richardson was dismissed by fine glove work by Riches off Hillier for a brave 54 to reduce the hosts to 166-5 in the 35th over to surely end the run chase but Cheshunt would not lie down repeatedly getting the required rate needed, 49 off 5, 40 off 4, 29 off 3, 23 off 2 before Tooth was trusted with the final over and 13 required, Tooth held his nerve to make Cheshunt require a 6 off the final ball of the season for victory and he bowled a precious dot ball to secure victory by 5 runs in one of the best matches of the season, a very good effort by all 5 bowlers who showed great control not to concede any wides or no balls.
