Match Report Date 04/09/11 Oppo – Cheshunt (A) The Orient supporters finished the season in style with a great 8 wicket win over Cheshunt on Sunday. Chasing down 229 the O’s made it home with one over to spare, with Eddie finishing on 93 not out and Liam 61 not out. Cheshunt won the toss and opted to bat first in the torrential drizzle and got off to a good start with Dean striking the ball very cleanly. However, seemingly fresh from the paddock, Big Al’s fetlock went again and the O’s were potentially staring at a large target, speculation largely based on the fact that the opposition had tracksuits which meant they might be quite good. In light of this Ed declined to serve up the usual ala carte menu of pastries and pies and was immediately court marshalled on the spot by Sergeant Heed for insubordination, and ordered to run from long on to long off for the rest of the game as punishment. Steve Hillier bowled up the hill amazingly managing to get to the crease each time as his glasses were steamed up by the rain, at one point the umpire was holding a chamois leather just for his specs. At the other end and bowling a very cunning leg side line throughout his spell Matt Hiscock repeatedly fired the ball down leg as the umpire was too cold and wet to signal wides and therefore increasing his stint in the driving rain. Ian Richardson bowled well to keep the runs down but as the number 4 and 5 got their eye in Cheshunt were cruising, taking runs with ease and eventually reached their total of 229 off 40 overs. After tea the two Bobs trotted out to the crease, Marshy hoping to continue his luck from the previous day at Ascot. The going was good for James as he cantered his way to an excellent 43; however Marsh unfortunately fell at the second fence and was caught for 18 after nodding off half way through a cover drive. Just 7 away from his fifty Bob James very sportingly walked from a fine leg-side edge to the keeper, which brought Liam to the crease, the O’s requiring 147 from 23 overs for the win. Ed began to up the scoring and Liam opened his account with a crashing cover drive and this set the momentum with a variety of Cheshunt bowlers going for boundaries with the O’s keeping up with the rate. With 10 overs left 56 was required and Liam reached his 96th fifty for the club with Ed following soon after with his half century. Cheshunt brought on the spinners in an attempt to spark a mini collapse but on a very flat even track the scoreboard ticked over with Ed hitting the winning runs to secure victory in the 39th over. With 20 games completed and yet another season over the O’s supporters finished on a high, yet again winning more games than losing with a record of played 20, won 10, lost 8 with 2 matches drawn.
