Match Report Date 04/07/10 Oppo – Walthamstowt (h) Type – 40 Overs Report by Liam Mulholland. O`s went down to a thrilling 2 run defeat at the hands of Walthamstow on a day various records were achieved. Losing the toss the O`s knew another hot afternoon in the field awaited them. O`s took to the field with 2 father and son combo`s in the Rumbold`s & Graham`s which is a first for the club (Apart from the Mulholland's). Stow started quickly racing to a rapid start despite Jack Rumbold doing a tidy impression of Hillier frisbees in fact a hell of lot better as he cut out the dross the POTY(WHO DID VOTE FOR HIM,COME ON SHOW YOUR FACE)usually sends down. 14 year old Oliver Graham struck twice and in the process became the youngest wicket taker for the club beating young Jack`s record from last month, the first wicket a well judged running catch by Kumar and the second an excellent low catch off his own bowling. A big moment of the match followed when Hawkins top edged a chance to Tooth who inexplicably did not get a paw on it, Hawkins would not make another mistake as he held the innings together for a well crafted 59 not out, for the highlight of the Stow innings please step forward Mr Ed Amas who like many club cricketers has always dreamed of clearing the ropes well today he achieved that feat you have a choice from (a) he danced down the track and send the ball soaring majestically 95 yards over long off or (b) received yet another pony legside full toss from Ramanuja and top edged over square leg for 6. It does not matter how it got there as over the ropes it sailed to be greeted by a roar from the boundary edge that would have drowned many a vuvuzelas. Unfortunately normal service was resumed as he soon missed a full toss and had his poles knocked over by Gordon Graham for his first wicket for the club. The Graham`s wrapped up the innings with Oliver 3-33 and dad Gordon 3-25 sharing the bowling honours, 206 all out maybe 20 short after the good start. Tea was taken and if you had the misfortune to sit with old boy James who complained bitterly about the depth of the filling of the jam tarts and that wagon wheels are not the same any more he told us yet again of the away match tea against Mr Kipling's Invitation eleven when he passed out eating 52 slices of bakewell tart. The O`s needed a quick start and this one made Usain Bolt look like Mike Redman as Kumar came out blazing hooking and pulling the unfortunate Kennerley for boundary after boundary the bowler from down under not quite hearing the repeated message of `pitch it up Jonno`, James went in the 6th over but the score was on 44 already. Kumar was off the mark with a single which was followed by scoring shots of 11 fours and 3 sixes as he raced to 63, eighty on the board in the 10th over is there any stopping the colossus from Colombo, well the scoring did slow up after yet another pull shot top edged into his face giving him a fat lip. After lengthy treatment would this stop him, no chance first ball back straight over the bowlers head for another boundary, Skipper Thompson snr brought himself into the attack and slowed the scoring down with his subtle spinners. Kumar has waited 11 years for a ton and luckily he had the calm 15 year old Rumbold to see him over the line for a devastating hundred. Kumar departed for 108 with the score on 158-4 in the 30th over surely the rest of the batting can get the job done, different game now runs dried up wickets started to tumble and then the turning point of the game when young Oliver Graham pulled a ball for what looked a certain four until Kennerley close in at backward square leg stuck out a hand for a great block but he then managed to catch the rebound for an astonishing catch. 161-7 33rd over the game was slipping away fast, when skipper Mulholland was caught on the boundary to make it 171-7 35th over the O`s looked doomed, Riches and Hiscock kept chipping away and some lusty blows from mad dog Riches got it down to 10 to win in the last over and finally a 4 to tie or 6 to win last ball a huge swing by Hiscock but sadly the ball went straight up and the O`s could only muster 2 runs falling just short. A cracking game played in great spirit, fair play to a very sociable Walthamstow team who were still supping yet another jug as the defeated skipper left the bar out boozed as well. The O`s look forward to the return of wide boy Wicks next Sunday who is slowly turning into Nigel Havers after a month of polo, croquet and clay pigeon shooting.
