Possibly the greatest game in cricketing history took place on Sunday as the O’s defeated the Ilford Catholics off the
last ball of the game. This game had everything runs, wickets, square-ups….. the lot!
Making his skippering debut (helping out the inexperienced Mulholland and Marsh), Matty Hiscock made a ‘gentleman’s
agreement’ with Arnie to let the Catholics to have a bat first due to logistical issues and players yet to arrive at
the ground (Favour No1). With everyone ready to go, Bob Marsh keeping wicket for the O’s finally made his way out onto
the field having reportedly made trap 2 a no go area.
Debutant Naveen Ali opened the bowling with some tidy spin getting the odd one to go the other way and it wasn’t long
before ‘Navman’ was rewarded with his first victim for the O’s when he trapped Sulosan (11) plumb LBW. After being
questioned why he didn’t appeal for an earlier decision, Nav said he wasn’t sure what the ‘rules’ were for Sunday
Friendlies so decided not to appeal ! Liam reassured Nav straight away that appealing was in fact allowed on a Sunday
but if he was in any doubt, he should have a quiet word with Al Wicks who would put him straight on the matter!
The O’s kept things reasonably tight with ‘Rocky’ Graham at the other end who took a wicket with an absolute
sensational C&B getting low down to his right and holding on to a stinging straight drive!
Graham also picked up another wicket following a good catch by Ian Morgan who is now ahead of Ajay in catches– (I got
it in the report for you Ian!)
Chinmeister was first change with young Manchanda coming on at the other end and both bowled tidy spells with Chinners
picking up a couple of wickets whilst Manchanda showed excellent flight. No-one really got going for the Cath’s and
with the O’s bowlers going through the innings without a wide or no-ball it was a good performance on a red hot day
with a short boundary.
Matty came on as the 9th change to try and remove Jaswant who was beginning to get his eye in. Jas who was reportedly
trying to get back into the Essex two’s creamed a six before deciding to chip one straight back to Matty – Very odd!
With the danger man/(county player) back in the pavilion, the Cath’s scampered there was to finish on 183-9 – A
respectable score.
Mrs Kumar’s tea was a blinder and ensured no-one went out hungry (Even Oli Graham!)
The O’s opened with Mulholland and Sandeep (aka Stevie Wonder) who didn’t last long as Liam was caught off the bowling
of Gowtham whilst Sandeep edged one off his cane (What else -Edgemeister) from the bowling of Athyian.
Joseph (Sponsored by Daz) was next to follow having edged one to Sulosan off the bowling of Rohit and the O’s were in
trouble as the beaming sun was coming down lower and lower causing trouble for the batsman.
Paurpali and Nav put on a few runs before Paupali was bowled by Rohit and the O’s looking like getting no where near
the 183 target, Matty joined Nav who went into carnage mode. Nav smashed sixes and fours everywhere making a quick 55
before finally being caught having snicked one behind off the bowling off Ashok.
Things were now getting tense so Arnie called in favour No2 (Matt - Is it ok if I bring on Anujan as a fielder?) Yeah
sure Arn………anything you want pal was the response from Matty.
Matty and Marshy kept the scoreboard ticking and with the sun drawing lower and lower, both found the conditions near
on impossible to bat in. A close run out call saw a minor tear up (For legal reasons no further information can be
given at this stage) but the O’s were up with now up with the rate and getting closer to home.
The O’s had got to the last over still in the game and with Arnie finishing his spell, Matty was caught nailing one
straight to point………….worse was to come though as Marsh was then run out trying to scamper a single!
Two new batsman at the crease (Graham and Chinners) and one to win off the last ball of the game and Chinners on
strike …………….the pressure was on. ‘He’s got no chance’’ said someone on the boundary. ‘’Chinners with a bat – Your
having a laugh son’ said another.
Arnie ran in and Chintan smashed him through the covers to win the game.
The O’s sprinted onto the field in jubilation…..Graham hoisted the stumps out the ground waving them as though the O’s
had won the world cup even some stoned junkie on the benches was yelling Chintan Chintan Chintan!
What a game of cricket!
