Oppo – South Loughton (a)
Type – 40 Overs
Report by Gordon Graham.

The O’s second game of the season took them to South Loughton looking for an improved batting performance on last week, and they got it,
despite an uneven pitch and a force 7 north-easterly that kept even Les in the clubhouse. Batting first, opener Liam Mulholland faced his
old nemesis Smith who again gave the batsmen nothing, and Rob Jones, looking to attack at the other end was bowled in the 6th over with the
score on 14. Debutant Jay Williams, played himself in with a boundary off a full toss, and went on to play the innings of the day with a
classy 55 that included 7 more boundaries, thereby becoming the first Leyton Orient supporter to travel to FA cup victories at Norwich and
Swansea and hit a 50 on debut. He & Mulholland took the score to 93 in the 23rd over before Jay was bowled by one that kept low. Veteran
spinner Pearn removed Mulholland for 45 with his first delivery from the M11 end to much merriment from both camps. Bob James & Joe Tousent
batted well for their respective 20 & 15. Bob’s reward for finally using his feet was an LBW decision off the bowling of Baker, who with
figures of 3 for 19 off 7, including the wicket of Tousent, proved to be S. Loughton’s most effective bowler. In the closing overs Vince
Mulholland (not out 10), skipper Simon Heed (7), and Steve Rumbold (not out 1) took the O’s to a solid 178 for 6.

Accurate bowling from Tousent & the bearded wonder James Walker kept S Loughton to a laboured 25 off 10 overs before both openers were bowled
in consecutive overs by the O’s duo whose spells ended with S Loughton on 57 for 2 after 16 overs. The Albert Road pair of Jack Rumbold &
Gordon Graham kept the lid on things, with the latter getting one to lift off a length or maybe it was a top-edge, resulting in the
unfortunate retirement of Baker with a cut forehead. A stunning one handed catch from the back-pedaling Vince Mulholland gave Graham his
first wicket & he and Rumbold ended with two wickets apiece and S Loughton requiring 74 from the final 8 overs. The return of Baker to the
crease gave the hosts some hope and he impressively finished on 66 not out but it was a case of too little too late as Vince Mulholland
turned the screw (2 for 8 off 4) aided at the other end by Jones and S Rumbold. With Williams always sharp behind the stumps and
Walker patrolling the boundary with the tenacity and appearance of a wolverine, S Loughton came up 29 runs short on 149 for 8.

Well done the O’s, and although Baker’s performance for the hosts deserves the highest praise, Man of the Match in the opinion of this
reviewer should go to debutant Jay Williams. Next up, away to Hainault & Clayhall.
